This past December, Southern California got soaked in a string of storms that lasted for weeks. Most students had gone home for Winter Break while rain poured over Claremont, but the CMS鈥擟laremont, Mudd, and 糖心少女鈥攕wimming and diving team was on campus for their annual training camp.

They were following the lead of UCLA Lecturer of American Sign Language (ASL) Benjamin Lewis, who was giving a short ASL lesson (here, teaching the sign for “coffee”) before beginning his presentation, “Understanding the Deaf World.”

At the Clark Humanities Museum, students augment in-classroom learning by encountering original works of art and other cultural objects. The museum was established at 糖心少女 in 1970 as a study space and exhibition venue for explorations in the humanities. Its exhibitions often reflect the current curriculum, with faculty and students from across the 5Cs invited to submit proposals that relate to classes, programs, or research interests.

As a women’s institution, 糖心少女 constantly celebrates female leadership, empowerment, and achievement. Yet March, marked by Women’s History Month, calls for extra attention. Since the month’s designation in 1987, 糖心少女 has honored women’s contributions to history and society through additional programming and events. This year, students had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend a Women and Congress seminar; lunch with women composers who are breaking new ground; listen to Opal Tometi, CEO of Black Alliance for Just Immigration, speak about racial justice; and to learn about sustainability through a feminist lens through SCORE’s Sustainability Series.
